What to Expect

The Transasia Express operates from Tehran to Ankara every Wednesday and arrives at the final destination on Saturday morning. Except for comfort, serenity, perfect service, positive emotions, you will be onboard a unique route that lies through the lake. In detail, the departing time for a Tehran – Van train is at 22:05 on Wednesday. The train which is operated by RAI (Islamic Republic of Iran Railways) makes a few stops on its way, exactly in Zanjan, Tabriz, Salmas, Razi. Tabriz is famous thanks to a salt lake named Urmia lake that is one of the biggest on the Iranian territory, and you will be able to see it.

When the train arrives in Kapıköy, all the passengers are requested to go out for passing passport control. After it, the train sets off to Van, a port city where a ferry is waiting for travelers. Besides, the Iranian train is an extremely comfortable one with 4-couchette compartments. Seats are transformed into beds to make passengers have restful time during a trip. Moreover, all bedding is provided by staff and is included in the price. There is also a dining car where you can have a snack or a nourishing breakfast in the morning. Here you can try Persian or international dishes but pay only in the Iranian currency.

Van Lake Ferry

Afterward, the ferry from Van to Tatvan is aimed at taking travelers from one coast of the lake to another. The ferry trip takes around 4 hours, but time flies when you observe the pure beauty of Van lake and its surroundings. On the ferry, there are cafeterias where you can grab a cup of coffee or tea and chat with other tourists. Lake Van is the largest one in Turkey, and there are a few small islands on this lake. One of them is Akdamar island where an ancient Armenian church is located. If weather conditions permit, you will be able to catch this outstanding view as well.

Back on the train, this time the Turkish one, you will see the same kind of compartments and seats. There is also a dining car where you can enjoy Turkish and international cuisines. You will be fascinated by exploring East Anatolia with lake Keban Dam and Kızılırmak river, talking with your friends in a compartment and sharing your travel experiences. Arriving in Ankara at 07:43 Saturday, you will have plenty of time to explore the Turkish capital or to continue your journey.

You will be traveling from Tehran to Ankara on the Transasia Express train which is extremely comfortable on both Turkish and Iranian sides. On both trains, you will stay in a 4-people compartment that is why if you prefer having more privacy, you will have to reserve a whole compartment for yourself. Moreover, all the necessary bedding like sheets, pillows, blankets will be given to you by train staff. Finally, the shared and clean toilets are located at the end of each wagon.

Tehran Ankara Train Cars

You can also have a snack, a hot cup of tea or a refreshing drink in the dining cars of the trains. On the train from Tehran to Van, only Iranian rials are accepted, but on the Tatvan – Ankara train you can pay either in dollars or Turkish lira. Besides, you can bring the food that you have bought before on board. It is extremely convenient if you keep to a special diet. In fact, in Turkey credit and debit cards are accepted in most places, however, you can exchange some rials to Turkish liras on the board of Van ferry. It is important to mention that all tickets are included in the final price and you will not be charged additional fees traveling on the Transasia Express train.

Furthermore, if you travel first to Iran, you already know that it is difficult to find an internet connection. In Turkey, it is much easier. You can find open WIFI spots in Ankara, however, there is no Internet on board of the Transasia Express. We would recommend that you download offline maps and have your own mobile data before getting on board the Transasia Express. Tehran Ankara Train Timetable

Boarding TrainTehran - Van

The train departs at 22:05 on Wednesday. You will travel in a 4-people compartment with locals and other tourists. Friendly staff will provide you with all bedding for you to have comfortable rest. On the way, a train makes a stop, so travelers pass passport control.

FerryVan - Tatvan

This is a ferry trip on Van lake that takes nearly 4 hours. There are comfortable seats and some cafeterias where you can sit and enjoy beautiful views.

Boarding TrainTatvan - Ankara

The last means of transport that you will take is a Turkish train. You will get on it in Tatvan, on the other coast of Van lake. The duration of the train trip is just over 24 hours. The train makes 5 stops in Muş, Elazığ, Malatsa, Sivas and Kayseri. At the end of each wagon, there are shared restrooms. Train is reaching Ankara Saturday morning at 07:43.
